PORT bosses were last night bracing themselves for another day of massive queues today as lorry drivers continued to struggle to get into Southampton docks.
Yesterday, trucks sparked nightmare jams for rush hour commuters trying to get in and out of the city as they were again left waiting for hours to pick up containers unloaded from ships.
As reported, drivers have complained of having to wait for up to seven hours to get into the port every day this week.
DP World Southampton, which runs the docks, says heavy fog on Monday night caused the problems because operations had to be suspended over safety fears.
The firm said contingency plans have been put in place to help clear a backlog of lorries, which it said has been made worse by more than 300 drivers abandoning their time slots without telling them. A spokesman said last night: “We are working very hard to resolve the issues as soon as possible through management of bookings. However, the weather forecast for tonight is for more severe fog and we will be monitoring the situation closely.”
