Local sailor Tom Mason from Fareham was presented with one of the RYA’s (Royal Yachting Association) most prestigious awards, an RYA Lifetime Commitment Award today from HRH the Princess Royal, President of the RYA at the organisation’s annual awards ceremony held at London’s One Great George Street.

A total of 44 voluntary awards were presented to winners hailing from across the UK from as far afield as the Isle of White to County Antrim.

Tom was nominated for his award by the RYA’s council members and was selected as a winner by the Awards panel for his work in giving his time, energy, expertise and dedication to the Hill Head sailing Club for over 35 years. His management has directly influenced the direction the club’s training has taken and his coaching status allowed the Club, as a recognised training centre, to become known as an active and high quality club.

Tom has been a cornerstone of good governance within the club and has set, and maintained, high standards of safety and care of students during Cadet Week. He volunteers at all levels, from weekly shopping for the kitchen stores, counting money and organising youth week, through to leadership and management.

Tom said of his win: “I feel very honoured and surprised. I’ve spend a lot of time at the club and enjoyed it immensely. My friend and colleague Paul Daysh was also instrumental in helping set up the student training with me.” Sarah Treseder, RYA Chief Executive says “The RYA is delighted to make this award in recognition of Tom Mason’s enthusiasm, promotion of our sport and many years’ contribution to the south’s sailing scene. The 44 RYA winners are an inspiration to us all and it is my pleasure to recognise and celebrate their hard work and dedication.”

Tom and the other RYA Award winners enjoyed a celebratory lunch in the presence of HRH the Princess Royal, and were presented with a commemorative medallion and certificate.
