POLICE have arrested two drivers after a fatal road collision early today.

The driver of a Mini, a 24-year-old woman, was detained on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Later a 23-year-old man, driving a Ford Focus, was also arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop and report an accident.

Both drivers, who are from Fareham, are currently in custody.

It follows an incident in which a 22-year-old man suffered serious injuries in Park Road, in Portsmouth city centre, at around 2.15am.

He was taken by ambulance to the Queen Alexandra Hospital in Cosham where he was later pronounced dead.

The road was closed until around 9am today for an investigation of the scene.

Sergeant Alyson West, from the road death investigation team, said: "I'm appealing for witnesses.

"The young man who died had been enjoying a night out with a group of friends and was walking back along Park Road when he was hit close to the junction with Burnaby Road.

"I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or saw either vehicle driving prior to it."
