THE Duchess of Cornwall took the salute as hundreds of soldiers marched through Salisbury city centre watched by thousands of members of the public.

Around 200 members of the 4th and 7th Battalions of the Rifles Regiment exercised their Freedom of the City by parading through the streets past as estimated 8,000-strong cheering crowd.

The duchess is the Royal Colonel of the 4th Battalion The Rifles and took the salute alongside the mayor, Councillor Brian Dalton, before attending a private reception for servicemen and women and their families, also in Salisbury.

The Freedom of the City of Salisbury was granted to The Wiltshire Regiment in 1944 in recognition of courage and achievement during the Second World War.

The Rifles, successor of The Wiltshire Regiment, have continued the relationship between the city and regiment.

The 4th and 7th Battalions were accompanied by the Band and Bugles of The Rifles, Old Comrades from the Gloucestershire, Berkshire and Wiltshire Regiment and members of the Wiltshire Cadet Force.

Camilla became Royal Colonel of the 4th Battalion in 2006.
