THREE communities in Southampton are to share in a £30m makeover.

More than 200 new homes are to be built in the schemes which will also include shops and create local jobs.

Last night Southampton City Council revealed it has appointed developers Lovell and First Wessex to build the new schemes in Harefield, Sholing and Townhill Park.

Work on the eco-friendly flats and houses is expected to begin in the spring subject to planning permission.

Councillor Peter Baillie, the Cabinet member for housing, said: “Our aim is to transform the economic, social, health and educational prospects of our residents and the estate regeneration is a vital component. These developments will include energy efficient homes and vibrant modern local shopping.”

The streets earmarked for redevelopment are Exford Avenue Shopping Parade Harefield, Laxton Close, Sholing, and Meggeson Avenue, Townhill Park. Half the homes in the scheme, which will also include seven shops, will be available to buy.

Chris Morris, chairman of the Federation of Southampton Tenants and Residents Associations, said: “Southampton City Council has done an excellent job. It has involved tenants and has listened to what tenants wanted.

“All these sites are going to transform the areas and people’s lives for the better. I am looking forward to seeing the end result and see people moving in.”

Lovell regional director Steve Coombs said: “We are looking forward to working on these schemes which will create significant improvements for local residents.”

Hazel Warwick, development director of First Wessex, said: “First Wessex is proud of the continuous regeneration work that it carries out, breathing new life into areas of the city that need it most.

“These three schemes are another example of our commitment to providing high quality affordable homes in the city, whilst developing communities to be proud of.”
