A CONSERVATION group in Hampshire has created a feast for the birds – and smashed a world record.

Using 992lb (450kg) of flour, 1,653lb (750kg) of suet and 882lb (400kg) of seeds, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust created the biggest ever bird seed cake.

Weighing in at 1.37 tonnes, it beat the existing record held by Kent Wildlife Trust of 1.29 tonnes.

The event, at the trust’s headquarters in Botley, was to launch a year of celebrations for its 50th anniversary.

Autumnwatch presenter Chris Packham, who is vice-president of the trust and helped out on the day, said: “The effort and commitment that went into this world record was amazing.

“I want it to inspire people in Hampshire to support the wildlife trust and really enjoy the beautiful countryside in which we live.”

The enormous cake will now be broken up into 10,000 portions and distributed across the county for garden birds to enjoy.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust will be at WestQuay shopping centre giving out portions for free today.
