NOW is your chance to have another say on the future of Southampton’s primary schools.

Final plans to expand 18 city schools have been cleared to go out for public opinion.

Parents, schools and their communities have already had a say on draft proposals.

Now Tory council leaders have approved the final list of schools they propose to increase in size from next September.

The city council wants to create 3,000 new places for primary pupils in the next eight years to avert a crisis in the system which could have seen some children turned away from schools.

Southampton’s reception classes are already at bursting point with forecasts of further rises in pupil numbers, driven mainly by a rise in births in the city.

The plans will expand infant, junior and primary schools across the city by up to 30 spaces. It follows a move last year to begin increasing ten schools in the city centre and Freemantle areas.

The statutory consultation will run early in the new year.

Two other schools, Beechwood Junior and Mansel Park Primary will be expanded through the normal admission process. The council believes that building works will cost between £10m and £37m.
