THERE may have been more than a smattering of unforced errors, but it certainly ranked high on the entertainment scale.

Chandlers Ford Central Club A, the former City Transport A side, stamped their authority on this season’s Super League with a resounding 8-2 win over their arch rivals and defending champions, Woolston Conservative Club A.

With five former Town Champions in the room, big breaks were promised. But it was not until the final frame of the night that the match’s solitary half-century was recorded.

In 2007/08, City Trans A finished runners-up to Totton Rec A in the Premier. The following season they finished runners-up to Woolston Cons A. And last season, in the inaugural Super League, Terry Azor’s boys again finished runners-up - and again to Woolston Cons A.

After three years of being the bridesmaid, Azor may about to be choosing a wedding dress.

They’re sitting pretty at the top of the league with a seven-point cushion and they’re unbeaten in ten since the start of the season and they’ve beaten Woolston Cons A twice.

Azor admitted he would have been happy with 5-5 or 6-4. But 8-2...

“I’m really pleased for the lads because they deserved it,” he said.

“We’ve had a good run. If it happens, it happens. It’s a game of snooker. We will be close but Woolston are a very good team. It’ll be ‘who stays the course the longest’.”

Ex-professional Danny Zagaroli was almost apologetic after seeing off Dan Hildyard 2-0. “My match was quite a bad standard, to be honest,” he said. “I played badly; he played a bit worse. But I got the run of the balls.

“It was just a matter of getting a result. We’re happy with 2-0 and it was a great result overall.”

And Zagaroli added that the title is there for the taking. “We’ve just got to keep picking up points,” he said. “It’s ours to lose now.”

Wayne Muddiman, who outscored Ollie Tydeman 2-0, said: “If we’d come away with a 6-4 we’d have been well happy just to get the win.” And he waxed lyrical about “(Mark) Benzey’s clearance in that second frame” and “Kevin’s (Vane) clearance in his second frame.”

Vane clinched a 2-0 against Adam Nash from 42 points down with 43 on in the second frame.

“I fluked a snooker and then thought I’d go for it,” he said. “It was scrappy all the way through.”

Benzey, the team’s Statto, pointed out: “We get a lot of 6-4s and 7-3s. They get a lot of 10-0s and 9-1s. We basically have to win three out of the four games we play against them or they’ll just romp away.”

Benzey, who lost his first frame to Woolston captain Drew Farminer, produced a 46 clearance to stifle any hopes the visitors had of a dramatic comeback.

Benzey said: “He took on a pretty reckless two-ball plant in the corner. It was the first chance I’d had and they were all there. They just happened to all go in.

“It changed the momentum a bit because it was just starting to go the other way. And then Kev made his clearance straight after. It’s a great result for us.”

After billiards star John Mullane had drawn with Mike Finn, Azor said: “I’m pleased I dropped myself because I wouldn’t have offered too much extra.

“We know there’s a few problems with the tables and the club are addressing it. Everyone on the committee has been outstandingly helpful in making our move as smooth as possible.”
