A FATHER and son have admitted offences of illegal dentistry from a private surgery in Southampton.
Barry Newcombe, 65, pleaded guilty to carrying out dental work while not registered with the General Dental Council (GDC).
He was fined £600 for two offences under the Dentists Act 1984 for treatment in connection with the fitting, insertion and fixing of dentures, and ordered to pay the GDC £3,100 costs.
His son Darren Newcombe also admitted being prepared to practise dentistry from the same premises in Regents Park Road, Southampton. He was given a conditional discharge for three years and ordered him to pay costs of £3,685.
Mr Newcombe said he had practised orthodontistry for 50 years and had wrongly continued to work ahead of his retirement when his registration lapsed. He said his son was a trained technician.
GDC chief executive Evlynne Gilvarry said: “People who treat patients without being registered with the General Dental Council are working illegally and we are committed to taking action to ensure public safety.”
