EXPERTS at the University of Southampton are leading a new project to allow broadband Internet networks to cope with 100 times as much data.

The EU-funded 11.8m Euro MODE-GAP scheme is designed at creating the next generation of web infrastructure, in a bid to keep up with demand for sending information.

It is feared that without the work, the future of the Internet could be “severely compromised”.

Led by the university’s Optoelectronics Research Centre, the project will work with experts from across Europe.

ORC project leader Professor David Richardson said: “We need to be looking now at developing a new generation of transmission techniques if we are to keep pace with society’s ever increasing data transport demands.

“The MODE-GAP project has the potential to revolutionise the way we build and operate future generations of optical network.”
