HUNDREDS of staff at one of Southampton’s biggest employers are today facing an anxious wait over their futures.
Workers at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) fear jobs could be axed if the government makes further cash cuts in their funding.
Staff at the organisation, which police’s the nation’s shipping from its headquarters in the city, are already subject to a list of belt-tightening measures imposed.
But they fear they are just the first round of cuts – and further reductions could make job losses unavoidable.
There is also concern coalition ministers are likely to impose reductions on the amount of money given to the Support for Maritime Training (SMarT), a scheme aimed at developing and instructing future members of Britain’s merchant navy.
