TONIGHT the true meaning of Christmas will be remembered.

Memories of lost loved ones will shine on when Southampton’s Tree of Light is switched on in a grand ceremony.

Just days earlier the Daily Echo–backed fundraiser was almost cancelled after the company due to fit the lights pulled out.

A last minute plea led to a change of heart.

Now hundreds are expected to gather at Millennium Gardens in Woolston when Mayor of Southampton Carol Cunio and award-winning diver Southampton Max Brick are set to turn on the 2,000 fairy lights to the backdrop of a choir and lantern parade.

The Woolston Christmas Festival starts this afternoon.

Each light will represent someone close to your heart as well as raise vital funds for the good neighbour Christian charity Communicare, which improves the lives of hundreds of vulnerable people across the city.

■ Woolston Christmas Festival will take place from 4pm until 9pm.

The main part of Victoria Road, in Woolston will be closed to traffic.
