A WELL-KNOWN fishmonger killed himself by stepping in front of a passing train, an inquest heard.

John Vardy, 79, told his GP he was “feeling low” days before taking his life at Swaythling Station, Southampton Coroners Court was told.

The inquest heard how Mr Vardy, of High Road, Swaythling, left a note before taking his life on August 16 this year.

Mr Vardy used to run J R Vardy Fishmongers in High Road, Swaythling.

Recording a verdict that Mr Vardy killed himself, Coroner Keith Wiseman said station CCTV clearly showed him “stepping into the void in front of the train”.

The coroner’s court heard how no-one witnessed the incident from the station.

The Daily Echo reported at the time that the train involved was the 6.03am Birmingham New Street to Bournemouth service which travelled through the station at 8.48am.
