HOVERCRAFTS between the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth have been suspended as vital safety checks on the fleet are launched.
Hovertravel stopped all services at 6pm last night and will not restart operations until they and the Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) are fully satisfied that the whole fleet is safe.
The action comes after part of a propeller came off on the five-year-old Solent Express Hovercraft on October 30, forcing bosses to launch a full safety investigation.
It is not yet known when services will be restored but Hovertravel are working to have the vessels back on the water as soon as possible.
The company has been providing services between Southsea and Ryde since 1965.
In a statement Hovertravel Ltd said: “It is important to stress that the current fleet of hovercraft are different models to the one in service on October 30.
“As a mandatory measure we are required to ensure the integrity of all our operating systems in conjunction with the MCA.
“The entire matter revolves around ensuring the safety of our operation.
"The safety of customers, crew & hovercraft are of paramount importance and Hovertravel are working with the MCA continually throughout the weekend to ensure the capability of the craft before they are returned to service.
“This will involve working through a number of further checks now being implemented to ensure that not only the MCA, but Hovertravel are fully satisfied that our craft are safe to operate.
“We are confident that with the support of the entire Hovertravel team, and the MCA we will complete this process as quickly as we can.
“We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience this matter has caused our passengers, and are grateful for their understanding.”
Terminal staff will be on duty as normal throughout the weekend to assist and update passengers.
