A nursery that provides care for more than 50 children has announced that it is to close.
St Peter’s Day Nursery in Segensworth Road, Titchfield, says that it has been affected by larger pre-schools opening nearby. Governors also say that the buildings used for the nursery, some of which are temporary, would require huge investment in order to compete with other childcare providers.
Chairman of governors Pat Shirley said: “There is now an over-provision of nursery places in the area and our occupancy rates have dropped significantly to the point where St Peter’s Day Nursery is no longer financially viable.
“We should like to thank all members of staff who have worked tirelessly, with loyalty and enthusiasm, to try to save the nursery from closure.
“We shall do everything in our power to support them through this difficult time and help them find alternative employment.
“We should also like to thank parents for the privilege of caring for their wonderful children during the last eight years.
“Information and support will be provided to help them find good quality care in other local nurseries. We wish them all well for the future.”
The nursery was set up in 2003, with the Parochial Church Council of St Peter’s Church as the trustees.
It currently has 52 children aged under five on its books, who attend sessions staffed by 22 nursery workers.
The nursery plans to close on Saturday, December 31.
