POLICE are urging residents to be on their guard against cold callers who could turn out to be doorstep conmen.
It follows several incidents in the Lymington area in which two men visiting homes failed to produce a pedlar’s certificate when challenged.
Door-to-door sellers need a certificate, which are issued by the police force for the area in which they live.
Jill Cleary, New Forest District Council’s Cabinet member for housing and communities, said: “If you receive a visit always ask for proof of ID – or a pedlar’s certificate –and don’t allow them into your home.
“If you are unsure, ask them to come back when you have a friend or relative with you.
“But if the caller seems threatening or won’t take no for an answer, close your door immediately and contact the police.
