DOZENS of eager shoppers queued from early in the morning to get a glimpse inside Hampshire’s newest supermarket.
The 49,300 sq ft Tesco in Quay Street, Fareham, was officially opened by the town’s mayor, Councillor Trevor Cartwright, and the store’s first customers were treated to champagne and cake.
A £1,000 cheque from Tesco was presented to the mayor to be given to his chosen charities – the Cystic Fibrosis Trust, Toe in the Water disabled sailing and the Warsash Wasps Sports and Football Club.
The new 24-hour shop has employed 270 people and funded a £1.2m redesign of the Quay Street roundabout.
