TWO Saints fans needed hospital treatment following an unprovoked attack by Bristol City fans after last weekend’s defeat.
Three Southampton supporters were walking to Bristol’s Temple Meads railway station following the clash when they were followed by up to 15 men chanting that they were Bristol City fans.
One of the Saints fans was asked for a mobile phone and replied that he didn’t have one.
One of the group then threw a punch, missed, but kicked him. As they continued their journey, a group of five or six attacked one of the Saints fans, kicking him in the head after he fell to the ground. His friend was also assaulted.
Both men were taken to hospital where one was treated for a fractured jaw and the other for cuts and bruises.
The attack happened in the Clarence Road area, near Cumberland Basin, at about 6.30pm. Avon and Somerset police are investigating and have vowed to bring those responsible to justice and issue them with football banning orders.
Force football officer Roger Thayer said: “We would appeal to anyone who knows those responsible to contact us.”
Contact police at Trinity Road police station on 101 or 01275 818340.
