A HAMPSHIRE Conservative MP has attacked the Prime Minister over the Government’s refusal to hold a referendum on the European Union.

Julian Lewis, MP for New Forest East, challenged David Cameron over plans for closer ties within the Eurozone, saying it would create a “dangerously undemocratic single government.”

Isle of Wight MP Andrew Turner also joined in, calling for a repatriation of Britain’s powers on immigration and employment.

It came during a raucous Prime Minister’s Question Time session yesterday.

Dr Lewis was cheered by Tory backbenchers when he asked: “Why is my Right Honourable Friend supporting a policy of fiscal unification for the Eurozone states, which, if it happens, will undoubtedly lead to the creation of a dangerously undemocratic single government for those countries?”

Mr Cameron said Britain was better off outside the Euro, saying that the Eurozone countries had to become more competitive to solve their financial crisis.

He added: “It’s for them to decide how to go and do those things. What we should do is maintain Britain’s position outside the Euro and make sure we safeguard our interests at the same time.”

Later this week, the leaders of the 27 EU states will discuss France and Germany’s plan for closer fiscal co-ordination between the 17 countries that use the euro.
