Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision on the A303 at Weyhill.
At around 5.45pm yesterday, a black VW Golf heading west came off the carriageway and down the embankment.
The driver, a 58-year-old man from Exeter, suffered life threatening injuries and was taken to Southampton General Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
The passenger, a 57-year-old woman from Exeter, suffered serious but not life threatening injuries and was taken to Salisbury District Hospital.
Lane one of the carriageway was closed for around six hours to allow for recovery of the vehicle and an investigation of the scene. Lane two remained open during this time.
Police would like to hear from anyone who was travelled along the A303 at that time and who witnessed the incident or saw the vehicle driving prior to it.
Anyone with information is asked to contact PC Steve Antrobus at the Whitchurch Roads Policing unit, quoting Operation Dearborn, on 101 or the anonymous Crimestoppers charity on 0845 045 45 45.
