Eastleigh council this week voted to plough £6.5m of taxpayer's money into buying the lease of the Rose Bowl - having already pledged more than £30m for a new hotel at the ground.
But as Julian Robinson discovers, Eastleigh is not the first council to become involved in developing high-profile sporting venues.
