ONE of the biggest auctions of farm machinery in Hampshire is taking place near Winchester at the end of October.

The sale of most of the 5,000-acre Hursley estate by Geoff Squire to two local landowners means that hundreds of items of machinery are being placed up for sale.

The auction at Pitt Down, near Hursley, on October 30 is being handled by BCM Bays Curry McCowen and Savills.

Iain Curry, a partner of BCM, said: "This will be as big as we have seen in this area in the last ten years.

"The most recent comparable one was the dispersal sale of Broadlands estate about four years ago.

"We don't often see machinery sales these days. We used to have four or five a year. Now the farms have got much bigger."

Mr Curry expects hundreds of people from Britain and Europe to attend to compete for some 400 lots, including tractors and combine harvesters. Viewing will be held on Friday, October 27, from 10.30am to 4pm.
