ARMY experts are into their second day dealing with a live explosive at the former HMS Daedalus airfield at Lee-on-the-Solent.

This is the second week of a five week operation to remove 20 Second World War pipe bombs in one of the biggest mine clearance operations ever seen in the county.

A 750-metre exclusion zone was today thrown around the former airfield. As on the previous operation last Monday and yesterday evacuation centres were set up.

But residents were allowed to stay in their homes as long as they remained indoors all day.

By 4pm yesterday it was clear that more time was needed for what is a slow and delicate procedure. Residents who had gone to evacuation centres were allowed back home for the night.

A Hampshire County Council spokesperson said: "As anticipated the Army requires a second evacuation this week to deal with the pipe mines at Daedalus.

"Therefore a full 750 metre evacuation zone will be in operation tomorrow from 9.30 am to 4pm.

"This means that all those residents affected by yesterday's evacuation will again be affected today."

Police were again be alerting householders this morning of the need to evacuate.

Road closures will also go into the second day.
