AS I sit in my deckchair in the late autumn sunshine, I can hear the collective gnashing of teeth of Tory right wingers and the United Kingdom Independence Party. How they must hate the fact that the European Union has been awarded the prestigious Nobel Peace prize!
They are probably already scrawling red ink letters to newspapers, expressing their anger that it is the European Union and not Nato that has been given the credit for keeping the peace in Europe for the last 60 years.
I am enjoying a little satisfaction that the virtues of the European Union are seen not just in Europe itself, but from those who sit outside, a major reason why so many countries are very keen to join up.
