Years of mystery have come to an end after the reason for ongoing works at a derelict pub has been revealed.

The doors of the Bent Brief in Lodge Road have remained firmly shut since 2015.

However, several workmen in unmarked vans were spotted at the site last year, arousing suspicion amongst city residents.

But as previously reported by the Echo, the owners remained tight-lipped about the works when asked.

A planning application, submitted to Southampton City Council in November, has revealed the pub is set to benefit from a two-storey rear extension, first-floor side extension, and a roof replacement.

However, there are no further details of the plans listed in the documents.

The pub is owned by St Mary's Supermarket Ltd - the company behind the Premier shop of the same name in St Mary's Road.

St Mary's Supermarket Ltd bought the site for £375,000, plus VAT of £67,500, according to Land Registry records.

A decision on the proposal is yet to be made.
