A new bus lane is set to be introduced on Millbrook Road West in Southampton, igniting strong opinions among residents.

The city council announced that the bus lane will run for around 200 metres towards the city centre before the Regents Park Road junction, following work completed under the Transforming Cities Fund three years ago.

The subject of bus lanes in Millbrook Road West has been a contentious political issue for several years.

Labour councillor Eamonn Keogh stated: "As part of our Local Transport Plan goal to improve bus services across Southampton, we are proposing two key improvements."

He noted that these changes aim to reduce delays and improve reliability for buses.

Conservative Millbrook ward councillor Jeremy Moulton said: “We remain concerned that the planned bus lane leading to the Regents Park Road lights will still cause congestion, especially with the added traffic problems associated with Costco and the petrol station there.

“If Labour do press ahead with this bus lane, I am asking that they trial it first so the effects can be properly understood.”

Some residents are also sceptical about the impact on traffic flow.

Stephen Payne commented: "Crazy idea. Typical Council.

"I live in Waterside, the bus service is poor value for money."

He believes the new bus lane will worsen existing traffic problems, a sentiment echoed by user Jay Aston Martin, who described the plans as "absolutely moronic."

Concerns about congestion are prevalent.

Critics like Marcus Lane argue for the removal of bus lanes entirely.

He stated: "Ban bus lanes no need for them!"

Others, like Steve Wren, are frustrated with ongoing roadworks across the city, saying: "Can they finish the road works on literally every other road in Southampton first?"

Supporters, however, believe the change is necessary for better bus services.

Chris Zardis pointed out that the lane was always intended for buses, as per the original funding plan.

The council is also considering another bus lane on Redbridge Road to enhance road safety.

Meanwhile, a public consultation on both proposals is open until November 22, inviting residents to share their views at transport.southampton.gov.uk/tro-consultations/a33-corridor-bus-lanes/.
