TWO women have been fined hundreds of pounds for dropping cigarette butts in a Hampshire town centre.

Sarah Richards was just two yards from a bin when she was spotted throwing her ciggie on the ground outside Fareham Library last August.

A month earlier, Gillian Lee was caught dropping a butt in West Street, Fareham.

Both women were issued £50 on-the-spot fines, but after refusing to pay them and ignoring warnings from Fareham Borough Council, they were taken to court.

Fareham magistrates ordered both Richards, 36, of Shannon Close, Fareham, and 59-year-old Lee, of Kanes Hill Caravan Site, Southampton, to pay £65 fines and a further £70 in costs for their offences.

The prosecutions were brought as part of a wider crackdown on littering in Fareham, in a bid to clean up the borough.

Seven people have been prosecuted through the courts and 47 issued with fixed penalty notices, which now cost offenders £75, since last April.
