DRIVERS in Southampton will be able to learn how to cut fuel bills and emissions through an innovative course.

The city council has signed up to be the first customer of Hampshire road safety charity The Blue Lamp Trust’s new eco-driving initiative.

The charity has launched the course to help motorists and businesses dramatically cut their fuel costs and reduce their carbon footprint.

By working with the charity’s instructors, who have experience in training the emergency services, drivers could be able to cut fuel consumption by up to 25 per cent.

The course offers a range of advice on efficient vehicle maintenance, driving techniques and vehicle use.

The city council has 1,100 places which will be offered to drivers from its staff and local businesses.

It is running the course as part of its My Journey initiative to reduce carbon emissions and air pollution, tackle congestion and improve residents’ health.

The council’s environment and transport chief, Jacqui Rayment, pictured, said: “The partnership between the council through its My Journey initiative and the Blue Lamp Trust is another fantastic example of innovation and commitment to make Southampton a better place to live. “Introducing the eco-driver driver training is essential to follow the city’s low-carbon vision to help businesses save money through their fleet and to make drivers aware that they are the key to achieving these.”

Mark Bradford, general manager of The Blue Lamp Trust and a former Superintendent in charge of Hampshire Constabulary’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “It is fantastic that an authority like Southampton not only sees the value our eco-driving course can deliver but is so committed to sustainability that they are making it available to local businesses too.

“Together we can make a real impact on not only the carbon footprint of the city but improve the air quality and cut fuel bills right across Southampton as well.”
