EXAM results are among the outstanding features at a Winchester school, according to an Ofsted inspection.
The Westgate School’s record at GCSE and Year 9 tests was highlighted after inspectors surveyed the Cheriton Road site in March.
Overall the school was rated as being good, while its exam record, pupil support services, summer camp for students joining the school and community links received particular praise.
In a letter to the school’s 1,135 students, Ofsted inspector Anne Wellham said: “You achieve excellent results in examinations and make good progress because you have high expectations and are encouraged to achieve your best.
“Even good schools can get better so we have asked the school to make teaching and learning more consistent so that all students are interested in lessons and everyone can be helped to achieve their potential.
“We have also asked the school to make sure that all staff use the systems in place to check that you make the progress you are capable of in all your subjects.”
Ofsted also ran its eye over the boarding and nursery facilities available at Westgate, with the latter being rated as outstanding.
“The inspection findings are a testament to the hard work and respect culture that pervades the school,” said Julie Turvey, head teacher of The Westgate School.
“Teachers and all staff work hard and are committed to ensuring students not only achieve excellent exam results but have extra-curricular opportunities. Pupils continue to impress me with their sense of community and respect for others.
“The support I have also received from parents since I arrived has been amazing. We are very pleased with the Ofsted results and even more delighted that we have the capacity to be outstanding in all categories within the next two years.”
Westgate’s achievements come just a week after Kings’ School in Winchester received a glowing report from inspectors, who rated them as being outstanding in all but one category.
