Adam Lallana will not feature against Chelsea in Saturday's FA Cup third round tie at St Mary's, although full-back Nathaniel Clyne could return.
Saints captain Lallana remains out with a knee injury and is likely to be sidelined with the problem for some weeks yet.
Right-back Nathaniel Clyne has missed the last two matches, also with a knee complaint, but could come into contention, while Gaston Ramirez is available after sustaining a dead leg in Tuesday's 1-1 draw with Arsenal.
Emmanuel Mayuka is also available before leaving for African Cup of Nations duty with Zambia on Sunday.
Saints manager Nigel Adkins has indicated he is planning to name a stronger line-up than he used in the Capital One Cup this season, but also hinted that some players could be handed a break.
"The Capital One Cup was a great opportunity to play some of the younger players, who have now gone on to play for us in the Premier League," he said.
"I want to go and win the game against Chelsea, but I also have to be mindful that we have had a run of fixtures that are very close together.
"I have to make sure we arrive on the pitch on Saturday full of energy and not risking anyone picking up a serious injury."
