Stags boss Steve Riley confessed to be “hurting” following his side’s 6-0 capitulation at free-scoring Chesham.

It was not difficult to see why as the home side’s towering strike force of Simon Thomas and Inih Effiong netted four times between them.

They had also blasted five goals between them in Chesham’s previous game, a 6-2 win at St Albans. “I take nothing away from Chesham as they were awesome,” said Riley, whose Stags had beaten leaders Hemel Hempstead in their previous outing on New Year’s Day.

“Every one of them earned an eight out of ten where only two or three of my players showed up well.”

Shining out on a gloomy day for Totton was teenager Baily Cargill, playing in Mike Gosney’s role wide on the left and testing home keeper Shane Gore several times.

“For such a young player he shows a superb attitude and his effort is excellent” said Riley.

“Dave Allen and Carl Pettefer gave everything but Dave is on crutches and it doesn’t look too good.”
