THE cream of the south’s running talent descended on Eastleigh’s Fleming Park on Saturday, for the Saucony Hampshire Cross Country Championships.
More than 600 runners went to post at the event, with the attendance boosted by 80 runners from Channel Island Clubs Guernsey Island and Jersey Spartan and also by the addition of races for under-11s for the first time in the event’s history.
For a full generation Aldershot Farnham & District AC have dominated these championships and rarely wavered from their perennial domination, but this season their club coaches targeted other races leaving the field wide open for new clubs to claim titles. And, with selection for the Hampshire team that will compete in Inter Counties Cross Championships in the Midlands based on the results obtained at this race day, competition for finishers was always going to be fierce in all ten races.
