Saints midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin believes Mauricio Pochettino will become a “great” manager for the club.

Pochettino’s first game in charge after controversially replacing Nigel Adkins in the St Mary’s hotseat ended in a goalless draw at home to Everton.

Despite the squad having only had about three days to work with the new boss before last night’s game, they turned in an impressive display.

Schneiderlin, who produced his own dynamic performance, said the players have already been impressed by the 40-year-old Pochettino since his arrival, and he is backing the Argentinian coach to achieve big things at St Mary’s.

“I think he’s great. In the next couple of weeks we’re going to get to know him better and he’s going to get to know us better,” said the Frenchman, ahead of the squad now going abroad for a training camp.

“We’re going to go away for a couple of days to learn about each other a bit better and to know what he really wants from us. He’s going to be great.”

Schneiderlin also gave an insight into what Pochettino had asked from the players last night, revealing an approach that was not at all dissimilar to that of Adkins.

“The gaffer asked us to play a high-tempo game with a lot of pressure to them, because we knew if we allowed them to play out from the back they have Fellaini and people like that who can hold the ball very well,” he said.

“So we tried to put a good pressure on them and I think we did that very well and I just think that if we play again like that we’re going to win some games, because today I think we deserved the three points.”
