AUSTRALIA'S preparations for the first Ashes Test have been hit by the news that Damien Martyn and Shane Watson have suffered injuries in Western Australia's clash with Queensland.

Western Australia's Martin was forced to withdraw just before the start of play after reporting tendonitis of the elbow, while Queensland's Watson later left the field with a hamstring injury suffered while bowling.

The 35-year-old will miss the match only as a precaution, resting his elbow in order to ensure he is 100 per cent fit for next week's first Ashes Test.
