AC Milan have made a move for Saints target Davide Astori, according to reports in Italy.
The Cagliari defender, who is valued at in excess of £10m, was among the players Saints were interested in signing last January.
In the end, Astori remained with the Serie A side, but the 26-year-old is expected to leave this summer.
Astori, who began his career with AC Milan, is again said to have attracted the attention of the Rossoneri.
Milan had previously been interested in the player, and have claimed before that they have first option on the centre half, should he wish to leave Cagliari.
Manchester City have also been linked this week with a move for the player to replace Joleon Lescott, should he depart the Etihad Stadium at the end of the season.
Saints wish to strengthen the heart of their defence this summer too, and could attempt to rival Milan and City for the Italian international’s signature.
Astori has made 30 appearances for Cagliari in Serie A this season, helping the club to a comfortable mid-table position.
