Gastón Ramírez helped Uruguay get their World Cup qualifying campaign back on track last night, as they beat Venezuela 1-0 away from home.

The Saints attacker played the first 59 minutes of the match, in Puerto Ordaz, as Uruguay won for the first time in seven games.

Napoli striker Edinson Cavani was the hero, netting the winner in the first half.

During their dismal six-match winless run leading up to the Venezuela fixture, Uruguay picked up just two points, as they tumbled down the South American qualifying group.

However, last night’s success saw them climb above Venezuela on goal difference into the fifth-place play-off berth.

The top four teams qualify automatically for next year’s World Cup. Chile, the team directly above Uruguay, are five points further ahead, but have played a game more.

Uruguay have four matches left to play in their campaign.
