SOPHIE Merritt broke two Wessex League records to help Southampton AC to victory in the second meeting of the season in Portsmouth.
Merritt was competing at the Mountbatten Centre after missing the beginning of the athletics season due to injury.
She had a great competition, winning the A string shot in a Wessex League record of 11.63m.
Merritt then took the A string discus in a personal best and Wessex League record distance of 42.05m. All eight of Southampton’s U17 women had wins.
Jordan Campbell won the A string high jump and javelin, while Amy Teal won the A string 100m, 200m and long jump.
Abbie Fisher was first in the A string 300m and B string 800m.
Caitlin Stewart won the A string 1500m, and Anna Sharp the A string 800m.
There were also wins for Alana Spires in the B string 1500m and Alexandra Burchill in the B string 200m, 300m and long jump.
Southampton AC’s Under 13 girls had a fantastic day in the Wessex League match.
There were huge pbs in the 70m hurdles for both Grace Kelly (12.9) and Georgia O’Dell (12.8), followed by another pb for Kelly in the long jump with 4.14m. Alice Orr made her debut for the club, so managed pbs in both the long jump and the javelin.
They were closely followed by the 1200m run, where Grace Reavey ran a lovely race for another pb or 4.24.1.
Jade Clements, usually a 200m runner, stepped in as the club’s B string runner and clocked 4.27.3 to win.
Samantha Callaway (U12) threw a superb pb of 24.36 in the discus which should put her in the top 10 UK rankings for U13 girls. Clements threw another pb of 19.51 which should also place her in the top 30 UK rankings.
There were two U12 girls running in the 200m, where Hannah Childs finished third in a strong field, with Liberty Griffen running another pb. In the high jump, Isabelle Bennett equalled her pb, and Faye Hooton (U12) passed her pb, to both clear 1.15m. Both the 800m runners – Amaya Scott and Freya Coe – were runners-up in the A and B string races, with Amaya running a pb of 2.43.5.
Scott (7.62m) and Faye Hooton (6.43m) threw huge pbs in the shot, with the latter winning the B string.
A and B 100m string runners – Georgia O’Dell and Hannah Childs – both clocked 14.8, a 0.3s pb for the latter. Grace Kelly (26.51m) won the A string javelin, and Alice Orr (16.09m) was second in the B string on her debut.
