SAINTS’ search for a new foreign striker has seen them linked with a move for the top scorer in the London 2012 Olympic football tournament.
They are the latest Premier League club believed to be interested in £17m-rated Internacional ace Leandro Damiao, who struck six goals in five appearances as Brazil finished runners-up in last year’s Olympic tournament.
The 23-year-old, who has been linked with Tottenham since last year, is a current senior Brazilian international but is not part of his country’s Confederations Cup squad.
However, Internacional are adamant they have received no bids for their main striker, who has helped them win the Brazilian League title for the last three seasons.
Director of football Luis Cesar Souto de Moura has played down reports that there have been bids for Leandro, with Saints known to be determined to sign a new striker this summer.
“Nothing has come, clubs from everywhere sound him out all the time, but we don't even consider that anymore, as there are too many enquiries but offers never come,” said de Moura.
“I am working with the idea of keeping the player, so that he doesn't leave.”
