Southampton’s Steve Crompton declared himself satisfied after his first round victory at the British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships in Nottingham.
The 35-year-old, who only took up the sport three years ago, completed a comfortable straight sets victory over fellow Brit Shaun Swetman, winning 6-2, 6-1.
“I definitely need to work on my serve a bit more, too many double faults in the first set,” he said. “I was just trying to do too much on the serve, trying to serve aces on my second service. I need to calm down a bit really but I put it down to nerves.
“I was tipped to win the match which played on my mind a little, I’ve not been favourite in a match ever I don’ think. But overall I’m quite happy.
Crampton, who now faces No.1 seed Stephane Houdet in the second round, added: “I’m not that hopeful, he’s such an amazing player but I’ll give it my all, go for every shot and every serve and you never know.”
