IWAN Thomas has paid a glowing tribute to former Hampshire athletics great Todd Bennett.
The Southampton-born Bennett, who turned 51 earlier this month, has passed away after a six month battle against cancer.
Fellow ex-400m runner Thomas said: “I’m really saddened by the news.
“Many people waking up this morning will be sad as well.
“There are a lot of people who will only have brilliant memories of Todd, and I feel very proud to have known him.
“I also feel pretty bad that I never got the chance to say goodbye to him properly.
“The last time I saw Todd was at Southampton Common, where he was giving up his time as usual to watch some of the youngsters he coached in a Parkrun event.”
Thomas, a former European and Commonwealth games champion, added: “I know how tough the 400m is, and I had the greatest of respect for Todd.
“He always gave it his absolute best.”
