Saints are considering a move for Catania striker Gonzalo Bergessio. (Daily Express & Daily Star).
The 28-year-old has been capped three times for Argentina, scoring twice, although he has not played for his country since 2010.
Bergessio joined Serie A club Catania in 2011, initially on loan, before making the switch permanent.
He has made 83 appearances for the club, scoring 27 goals.
A report in the Italian press has suggested Bergessio is a fall-back target if Saints cannot convince Roma’s Pablo Osvaldo to join them.
Bergessio began his career at Argentinean club Platense, before moving to Instituto and Racing Avellaneda.
Benfica paid about £2m to bring him to Portugal in 2007, but he made just seven appearances, scoring no goals, before returning to Argentina, with San Lorenzo, at the end of the year.
His form improved back home and he was subsequently sold to French club Saint-Étienne for just over £5m in 2009. He struggled there too, however, before landing in Catania.
Saints might make a move for 24-year-old Nigerian striker Kennedy Igboananike, who plays for Swedish side AIK. (Daily Mail).
Igboananike has scored nine goals in 19 appearances for his club this season, having moved to the Stockholm-based outfit from Djurgårdens.
It was there that he actually began his professional career, before joining another Swedish side, Vasalunds.
Igboananike’s agent has been quoted as saying that clubs from the top leagues in England, Turkey and Russia are following the player, who is yet to be capped at international level.
Manchester United are ready to make a £60m bid for Gareth Bale (Daily Mirror).
Wayne Rooney will join Chelsea in a £25m deal, with Manchester United using the money to make an increased bid of £28.9m for Cesc Fábregas (Daily Star).
José Mourinho has admitted that Rooney is Chelsea’s one and only target for the remainder of the transfer window (Various).
But Arsenal have also joined Chelsea in the fight for Rooney (Guardian).
Sevilla striker Alvaro Negredo will complete his £24.5m move to Manchester City after having a medical today (Daily Mail).
City will also finalise a deal for Fiorentina forward Stevan Jovetic, as well as Negredo, in the next 48 hours (Daily Express).
Napoli manager Rafa Benítez is trying to hijack Arsenal’s move for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuaín (Various).
Both clubs have been told the forward will cost them £37m (The Times).
Fulham are preparing a £1.5m offer for West Brom striker Peter Odemwingie (Daily Express).
