Tonight represents one of the final chances for some Saints players to impress Mauricio Pochettino before the new Premier League campaign begins.
The manager has once again taken his side abroad, this time to face Spanish outfit Celta Vigo in what will be the penultimate fixture of their pre-season programme (kick-off 7pm UK time).
The teams will compete at the Balaídos stadium in the annual Quinocho Memorial Trophy match, which is held in honour of Celta’s former player and official Joaquín Fernández Santomé, known as ‘Quinocho’, who was killed during a robbery at the club in 1988.
Like Saints, their opponents this evening are about to embark on a second consecutive season in their domestic top flight, following an extended absence.
After a five-year exile, they returned to La Liga last season. It appeared as though they would be making a quick exit, but they won their final two games of last season to escape the relegation zone and finish 17th.
Celta are under new management this season, with former Real Madrid and Barcelona star Luis Enrique having taken over earlier in the summer.
They are also having to come to terms with the loss of their star player, Iago Aspas.
The forward, who scored 12 league goals last term and netted 23 times in their 2011/12 promotion campaign, joined Liverpool in a £7m deal in June.
Celta still have some talented players in their ranks, though, notably Danish international midfielder Michael Krohn-Delhi, who scored against the Netherlands and Germany at Euro 2012.
They also possess former Barcelona centre half Andreu Fontàs, while they have taken winger and Thiago Alcântara’s younger brother, Rafinha, 20, on loan from the Spanish giants.
Saints have not long finished their pre-season tour to Spain and Austria, but have flown back out for this match. They will then return to face Real Sociedad, at St Mary’s, next Saturday.
For Saints, many eyes will be on Gastón Ramírez and Maya Yoshida, as they bid to reach full fitness ahead of the start of the season, following their participation in this summer’s Confederations Cup.
Arguably of as much interest is how some of the younger members of the squad continue to do.
Saints have given a handful of academy graduates a chance to impress this summer, with Calum Chambers, Lloyd Isgrove, Jordan Turnbull and Jack Stephens all taking part in the pre-season tour.
Chambers has particularly impressed, having started all four of the friendly fixtures so far at right-back.
Saints require additional support for Nathaniel Clyne in that position, and it appears the 18-year-old, who this week signed a new four-year contract, could well provide that, which would save the club dipping into the transfer market to improve that area.
Isgrove will also hope to have a chance to build on his reputation, after netting his first senior goal in the 3-1 victory over Besiktas last time out.
