Jack Bishop has been forced to postpone his first boxing show in more than 60 years in the fight game.

The veteran promoter, trainer and manager has had to put back next weekend's show, scheduled for Sunday, December 17, until Sunday, January 21, due to an injury to a key boxer.

Steve Ede was due to be heading up the bill with a fight against Conroy McIntosh for the vacant British Masters middleweight title.

However, Ede was injured in a sparring session with Southampton's former World champion Matthew Barney this week.

Although the groin injury he sustained won't keep him out of action for too long, there is no way he can go ahead with the fight a week tomorrow meaning Bishop has had to push back the date for the show at Southampton Guildhall.

He said: "We were putting Steve over the ten rounds and Matthew Barney was going to take the opening ones.

"We got into the fourth round and Steve went to spin Matthew and went over on his ankle.

"He came over to the corner and I thought it was his ankle but he was clutching his groin and said there was a sharp pain there.

"It got worse overnight and we got a full report and on the basis of that there was no option but to postpone the show until January 21.

"It's the first show I've ever had to cancel. I've always said I'd never cancel a show but there was no way around it at all."
