Eastleigh moved a point closer to promotion to the Skrill Premier with a 0-0 draw at Chelmsford City but Sutton’s 3-1 home win against Ebbsfleet means the Spitfires still need a maximum of four more points to clinch the title.
Chelmsford looked the livelier side at the start and Michael Cheek had a good chance but he just hit the ball forward too far and Michael Green was able to clear off the line.
Matthew Lock was also not too far off target with a free kick as Chelmsford, captained by former Spitfire Mark Hughes, were putting Eastleigh under pressure at the start as they needed the points at the other end of the table.
However, Eastleigh finished the half strongly and they had four attacks in the last five minutes of the half.
Jai Reason had the best chance but, with the goalkeeper out of position, his effort was narrowly wide.
Yemi Odubade and Reason both forced saves from Chelmsford goalkeeper Carl Pentney.
This was their fifth away draw since the beginning of March and, although Ben Wright and Dan Wishart forced saves from Pentney in the home goal, it was Chelmsford who had the better chances in the second half and Luke Callender and Michael Cheek both had chances that they would be disappointed they did not make more of.
It was never a classic game but, from an Eastleigh point of view, with three of their four remaining games at home, they must be hopeful that they can complete the job.
Eastleigh host Dover on Tuesday night and welcome Basingstoke Town on Friday.
