Eastleigh ended the best season in the 68-year history with successive defeats after Boreham Wood played the role of party poopers.
The Spitfires, having lost 1-0 at home to Havant & Waterlooville on Easter Monday, following their Skrill South title-securing win against Basingstoke Town on Good Friday, were beaten by the same scoreline at home to Boreham Wood.
Greg Morgan scored in the 12th minute as Eastleigh’s 14-match winning streak at the Silverlake Stadium came to an end on the last day of the Skrill South season.
The goal was not without controversy. A minute earlier, Eastleigh had appeals for a penalty turned down when Chris Todd appeared to be held down by Callum Reynolds.
And Todd and Spence were furious that Morgan appeared to have bundled Will Evans off the ball in the build up to the goal. Morgan carried on unperturbed, sprinting free of Evans to send a low shot, from the left side of the penalty box, across Flitney and into the net.
Eastleigh struggled in their pursuit of an equaliser Defender Todd came closest, but his second-half header from a corner was cleared off the line and Jai Reason volleyed tamely wide.
Eastleigh’s Ross Flitney was by far the busier of the two goalkeepers, but with promotion secured Hill can now look forward to planning for life in the Conference.
