Morgan Schneiderlin could be fit to return to the Saints squad for tomorrow’s game at Swansea.
The French midfielder was forced to sit out last weekend’s win over Everton at St Mary’s after picking up a knock on his quadricep.
Saints are hopeful that Schneiderlin will be available for selection again tomorrow.
He may have to wait his chance to get straight back in, though.
Saints produced an excellent performance and result to down the Champions League chasing Toffees at St Mary’s, with Victor Wanyama and Jack Cork pairing up together in the holding midfield roles.
If Mauricio Pochettino decides to hand Schneiderlin an instant recall it will mean one of Cork or Wanyama gets dropped for the trip to the Liberty Stadium.
Amazingly, the game against Everton was the first time Pochettino had paired Cork and Wanyama together in the Premier League.
At the start of the campaign Pochettino was regularly selecting Wanyama, following his £12m move from Celtic, alongside Schneiderlin.
After Wanyama’s leg fracture Cork got his chance to impress and took it.
The stats show there is not much to choose between the pairings used by Pochettino when analysed over the course of the season.
Schneiderlin and Wanyama have a slightly better record but it is marginal and was largely achieved at a point in time in which the entire side were firing on all cylinders.
Pochettino is still set to be without long term absentees Kelvin Davis and Jay Rodriguez while Gaston Ramirez is hoping to return at some point. Though he should still be bag a place in the Uruguay squad for the World Cup, he could do with minutes on the pitch for peace of mind and to try and guarantee his spot.
