Saints have reportedly had a £10m bid rejected for Tottenham winger Andros Townsend.
The 23-year-old England international could find himself down the pecking order at White Hart Lane this season, but Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino has praised him in recent weeks and hinted he wants to keep hold of him.
Saints are targeting the signing of a wideman before the close of the transfer window.
They have had an interest in Norwich’s Nathan Redmond, amongst others.
Sky Sports have suggested that Saints have made a move for Townsend that has been rebuffed by Spurs, but these have not been confirmed by either club.
Speaking of Townsend recently, Pochettino said: “Townsend is another player, he is in the squad.
“He is an important player, he is a player for the English national team.
“He missed the World Cup with injury. We need to recover a player like him because he has great potential and very good quality.”
Saints have already managed to prevent Tottenham from signing one of their players, Morgan Schneiderlin, despite heavy interest in him during this transfer window.
