A Hampshire swimming club are looking to unearth the Team GB superstars of the future.
Hamble Aquatics Swim Team has opened its swim lanes to budding swimmers from seven to 18-years-old at their base at Hamble Community Centre.
They want youngsters who can swim 50m front crawl and 25m of two other strokes to join their up and coming outfit.
“All the swimmers train hard but enjoy themselves as well,” said head coach Paul Dollery.
“There is a healthy competitive spirit amongst the swimmers and it is also great to see the swimmers cheering and supporting each other. “It is a sport which everyone can compete at both at an individual level and as part of the team.”
It has been a hugely successful year for the team.
The relatively small club has 75 swimmers, but they have picked up a series of big victories, including 44 medals at the Hampshire Championships – 17 gold, 12 silver and 15 bronze.
One swimmer, Toby Fredericks (pictured right), became overall 11-year-old boys Hampshire County Champion at the competition – winning 11 individual events and breaking three county records in doing so.
Marcus Scullion, Nathan Hookway and Ben Pitter were also all county champions.
Fredericks added further to his collection, achieving an incredible silver and bronze medal at the Southeast Regional Championships, where he swam at national qualifying speeds – achieving a back stroke 100m third place with a time of 1:10.90 and runners-up spot 200m time – and PB – of 2:31.95.
Gemma Elliott was another Hamble swimmer who tasted success at the regional event, getting crowned champion after winning gold in the 100m freestyle. Elliott also won bronze medals in the 200m, 400m, 800m freestyle and 200m backstroke and silver in the 400m individual medley.
The talented youngster also finished 2nd overall in the girls 11-year-old British Age Group Categories. Twelve swimmers qualified for the individual events at the regional’s, nine in the age group category and three in youth with a fantastic 55 qualified swims between them.
“We’ve performed extremely well in so many competitions,” said Dollery, who has overseen the club’s progression since his arrival in April 2012.
“It is brilliant to see us doing so well.”
“The results reflect the dedication and commitment of our swimmers.
“It is great to see just how much progress they have made.”
