Nathaniel Clyne believes he and Dusan Tadic have the perfect chemistry to make this the year of the right side at Saints.
Last season there was a lot of focus on Saints’ left side, with Luke Shaw creating headlines for his remarkable performances as a teenager and linking up with the superb Adam Lallana.
Clyne believes it is time for the right side to also shine now and, with he and Tadic looking so threatening together in tandem, is confident that will happen.
“He likes the ball to feet and I like giving the ball to feet,” smiled Clyne.
“He likes it when people run and I make runs for him. We have a good connection and hopefully we can continue that.
“He always wants the ball and I like players like that.
“He always wants the ball and even when there are players behind him. He says ‘give the ball no matter what.’ “He’s a good team leader as well and gets the players going around him as well, which is good.”
It’s been a well documented summer of change at Saints but as one of those players that remain in the squad from last season, Clyne is enjoying life with fresh faces around.
“It is a bit different, seeing a lot of new faces, but it’s just experience really and we need to get everyone to gel,” he said.
“We are working hard in training and on every player’s game and it’s coming together well.”
Things have also changed in terms of Clyne’s standing in the side.
Last year was a battle with Calum Chambers for the right back slot, but it’s a position he now has to himself.
“I know that if I play well then I get to play. I can make the right back position my own, I can get forward as much as I like to do and get crosses in.
“I enjoyed the contest between me and Calum last season and it made me a better player last season mentally and physically and I am looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Clyne is adamant that he still has plenty to learn to become a complete player and believes that having a world class defender in the shape of Ronald Koeman in charge of the side is ideal for him.
“He’s got a lot of experience as a player playing at the highest level and he can bring that experience to us players,” reflected Clyne.
“You can see with his tactics and how he wants us to play.
“It suits me because he wants me to get forward and I love getting forward and hopefully I can chip in with a few more assists and goals.
“If I keep my fitness hopefully I will be in with a chance.”
