Ronald Koeman was delighted to secure a first Premier League win as Saints manager.
The Saints boss felt his side were good value for their 3-1 victory against West Ham at Upton Park, which sends them into the international break with four points on the board from their first three games.
“I think we deserved to win,” said Koeman.
“I think we started very good, the first 15 minutes we were in total control with good ball possession but we didn’t create a lot in the first 15 minutes.
“I don’t understand after that period why we had more problems. Maybe West Ham played long balls and long throw-ins and it’s always difficult to fight the second ball because that’s one of the qualities of them and we lost a bit of control in the game.
“Luckily we scored the 1-1 before half time because that’s always if you make the goal a fantastic moment.
“I told the boys at half time ‘keep the sprit and believe in winning and play to win, not to draw or not losing, play to win.’ “What I saw was today we were a much better team than West Ham today and you have to believe that and have to play for that.
“We did that in the second half with more pressing, good ball possession and we deserved the three points.”
